Payment plans with Jotform: send customers from your form to a Paythen payment page

Keep your Jotform order, booking or enrollment form and let customers pay in full or by installments, with their total passed straight to Paythen. Works with varying and fixed totals, add-ons, quantities etc.

Written by Roohbir Singh

Keep your Jotform order, booking or enrollment form. When someone submits it, Jotform sends them straight to a Paythen payment page with their total already filled in. They choose to pay in full or by installments, and Paythen runs the schedule, reminders, retries and failed-payment emails from there.

This works for anything where each customer's total is different: products with options, services and packages, event or workshop registrations, or course fees with add-ons. It uses a Paythen template link, so there's no code and no Zapier needed.

Free to set up and test. Your Paythen account starts in test mode, so you can run the whole flow with a test card before you connect Stripe. Always free while you test. Just 2% per live payment.

How it works

  1. A customer fills in your Jotform form.

  2. On submit, Jotform redirects them to your Paythen template link, adding what they're paying for, their total, name and email to the link.

  3. Paythen shows a payment page for that exact total, built from your template (for example, pay in full or a 6-month plan).

  4. The customer pays the first amount. Paythen charges the rest on schedule and sends them a page where they can see their payments and update their card.

Step 1: Create a Paythen template

In Paythen, go to Templates and click New template (or go here directly). Pick the type that suits what you sell:

  • Flexipay: customers choose to pay in full (with an optional pay-now discount) or design their own plan within your limits, such as a minimum deposit and a final payment date.

  • Date-based: everyone pays on the same dates, so payments line up with your event, course or project dates. You can also charge on the same day each month.

  • Payment plan: a standard weekly, fortnightly or monthly plan.

Save the template and copy its link from the template summary page. It looks like https://app.paythen.co/template/abc123.

Step 2: Build your redirect link

Add the customer's details to the end of your template link. Only plan_name and price are required:

Paythen name

What to pass

plan_name (required)

What the customer is paying for, for example the product, service or course name followed by "payment plan". Shown on the payment page.

price (required)

The total to charge, as a plain number such as 1450 or 1450.50, with no currency sign.

name

The customer's name, so they don't type it again.

email

The customer's email.

freeze

freeze=name, email shows the name and email but stops them being changed, so your form and Paythen records match.

Your template summary page lists every value you can pass, including currency, the number of payments, a custom confirmation page (customer_redirect_url) and any custom fields you added. See the full list.

Get the total from your Jotform form

Paythen needs the total as a plain number. Add a hidden Form Calculation widget that adds up the price and any options or add-ons, and use that field in the link below.

Step 3: Set up the redirect in Jotform

  1. Open your form in the Form Builder and go to Settings, then Thank You Page.

  2. Choose Redirect to an external link after submission.

  3. Paste your redirect link (from Step 2) into the URL box and save.

Jotform fills in a value wherever you put a field's Unique Name in curly brackets, like {totalAmount}. You'll find each field's Unique Name in its properties.

Example:

https://app.paythen.co/template/abc123?plan_name={productName} payment plan&price={totalAmount}&name={fullName}&email={email}&freeze=name,email

Replace the field names with the ones on your form, and abc123 with your own template link.

Tips: If a name field's value doesn't come through, use the field's Unique Name on its own (for example {fullName}) rather than a sub-part like {fullName:first}. Jotform allows one payment gateway per form. You don't need one at all for this flow: Paythen takes the payment.

There's a live example of this flow in our Jotform FAQ.

Step 4: Test it

Submit your Jotform form yourself while your Paythen account is in test mode. Check that the payment page shows the right plan name, total, name and email, then pay with the simulated test card. You'll see the test customer in your Paythen dashboard. When it all looks right, connect Stripe and your form is ready for real customers.

FAQs

Every customer has a different total. Does that work?
Yes. The total comes from each submission, and Paythen builds a plan for that amount.

Can customers still pay in full?
Yes. Use a Flexipay template and customers can choose to pay in full or by plan on the same page.

Can my team manage payments?
Yes. You can invite unlimited team members to your Paythen account for free. Customers who fall behind are flagged in your dashboard, and you can pause, change or cancel a plan there.

Can I send the payment link by email instead of redirecting?
Yes. Use our Zapier app: when a new Jotform submission comes in, the Send Payment Plan Link via Email action emails the customer their Paythen link.
